The little family came over to the tree and settled next to the box.

I carefully tore off the wrapping paper.

It was just a fruit snacks box! I found that strange.
"Hmm," I said. "But wait, this looks like the box of fruit snacks I threw out!"
Then I felt the box shake and I gasped.

My eyes widened as the side of the box burst open.

Then CHRIS's head popped out.
"Hello, everyone!" he greeted.
"Oh my gawd! Chris!" I shrieked.

I let him sit in front of me.
"How have you been?" I asked, still in happy shock. "What about Peyton?"
"I think Peyton's fine," he said. "We both understand that we have to be separated in order to achieve happiness. We knew that he was better off in Sarah's family, and I was better off here. We both knew that you guys were our true families."

"Chris!" Amelia exclaimed as she tackled her brother.

Amelia got off him and let Chris get back up.
"Hi, Amelia!" Chris exclaimed. "Merry Christmas! I missed you."
"You kept your promise!" she exclaimed.
"Of course," Chris said. "A promise is a promise."

They hugged.
"Even to yourself," Amelia finished his Big Comfy Couch quote.

(Chris promised Amelia right before Halloween that they'd spend Christmas together.)
Then Shuffle hugged his lost adoptive son.
"Chris!" Shuffle exclaimed anxiously. "I can't believe you're back! Where have you been all this time?"

(Chris never actually told anyone besides me that he was leaving.)
They broke from the hug.
"I went back to go live with Abby," Chris explained. "I thought things would get better at her house because she was moving but I thought wrong. I mean, things were a bit better, but not as I had hoped. Abby had gotten nicer and gotten me a friend, Peyton the Beagle, from a Good Will store, but it never felt as great as it felt here with you guys."
"Well we're all so glad you're back," Shuffle said contently.

Shuffle wrapped around his wing around Lily and said, "to add to you coming back, Lily and I are having a parental ceremony."

"Yay!" Chris exclaimed as he hugged his soon-to-be mother. Lily blushed.
