That morning was an
exciting one. None of us slept in. In fact, we stayed up until 11:30 PM and
didn’t care. We woke up at 5:30 AM and didn’t care. We were so excited. We
could not wait to find our fathers.
We lied in the bunk
bed. Selena and her cat lied on top bunk, and Jason and I lied on the bottom
bunk with our cats.
At 6:30 AM, we all
got ready to go. We took turns playing on Webkinz, and watched early-morning
cartoons.
At 7:00 PM, Selena
and I kept sending Jason to the window to see if Grandma and Grandpa were
coming early. We didn’t want to miss a thing.
Then at 7:30, we
called them up. The first time, no one picked up. Then the second time, Grandma
picked it up, still mostly asleep, and started talking gibberish. It was funny,
but we couldn’t take the wait.
At 7:45 AM, I dug
through my drawers, and found an old Barbie brushed and Selena and I used it to
brush our cats. Jason’s didn’t need it because he had a short-haired Webkinz.
But once in a while, Jason would straighten out Salem’s hand with his hands. We
even straightened out our cats’ whiskers a few times.
After all that
waiting, it was finally 9:00 AM. But Grandma and Grandpa didn’t show until 9:15
AM.
“I’m telling you,
Max. There’s a lunatic calling us!” Grandma said.
“Aw, shucks, Lee.
That was just the kids! Didn’t you see the Caller ID?” Grandpa said.
“What if…” Grandma
said.
‘So, Katrina,
Jason.” Grandpa interrupted. “Hi. Hi to you too, Selena. Sorry were late.
Grandma wouldn’t stop talkin’ gibberish.”
I laughed.
“That’s ok, Grandpa.
Can we go now?” I said.
He laughed.
“Fine. Go get your
bags and load up in the van.” He said.
We got our bags, put
them in the trunk, and got in Grandpa’s mini-van.
Grandma and Grandpa
sat in the front, Selena and I sat in the middle-back seats with Sophie on my
lap, and Pears on hers, and Jason sat in the back-back seat, with Salem on his
lap.
So we were off, on
our little cat trail to Texas.
“You must be bored
by now.” Grandpa said. “Is there any fancy stories you’d fancy to tell?”
“Well, there is one
story.” I said.
Selena and I gave
eyebrow messages to each other, and she knew what story we would tell.
When I looked to the
back of the car, Jason looked puzzled. Selena and I pointed to our cats, and
then he knew what story the three of us were going to tell together.
We were going to
tell our story of how Webkinz brings people together…
